Celtic Convention in May, Santa Ponsa 2010
Inaugurated in 1944 by its first president, Willie Fanning of Glasgow, with the primary aim of "promoting and preserving the heritage and traditions of Celtic Football Club" the Celtic Supporter`s Association (CSA) has a proud history of supporting Celtic for over 60 years. One of the stated aims of the association is to promote social interaction between its members and in 2006 the first CSA European convention was held in Benidorm to celebrate the club winning the European cup. As many as 20,000 supporters gathered for a week of good-natured partying and the event was so successful that another convention is planned for this year to be held in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca from 18th to 25th May.
As in Benidorm, there will be a Celtic Village set up in the town, although this time it will much more accessible being only five minutes from the beach and there will be no entry fee. Open until midnight every night of the convention; there will be everything from food and drinks to t-shirts and other souvenirs, with music every night except for Gala Dinner night. Expected to be the highlight of the convention week, the dinner will be held at the Gran Casino Theatre including special "Celtic" entertainment and the acclaimed "Come Fly With Me" show, billed as "Broadway comes to Mallorca". During the convention the spectacular and exciting "Pirates Adventure" troupe will be running special shows, both family and adults only, for the Association members.
Santa Ponsa is a holiday resort surrounded by large areas of pine forest on the southeast coast of Mallorca. One of the most important historical sites in Mallorca and an area of special archaeological interest, it was on this part of the coast that King Jaume 1 landed on 10th September 1229 to conquer the island in the name of the Catalan-Aragon kingdom after more than three centuries of Muslim rule. A cross at the entrance to the marina marks the spot where the king landed. In contrast to the "Brit" resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf; Santa Ponsa has a very strong Celtic theme and is already a popular destination for Irish and Scottish visitors with a large number of Irish and Scottish themed bars and restaurants alongside the local Spanish and international cuisine in the town.
Besides the usual attraction of the beautiful, palm-fringed beach of the main resort, there are the more secluded coves at Calo d`en Pellicer and Little Beach. As might be expected of a resort town, there are very good facilities for water sports, regular boat trips along the south west coast, horse riding and an excellent golf course. Other attractions are the Aqualand and Wild West water parks and many sight-seeing locations such as the picturesque monastery at Valldemossa and the Caves of Drach.
Holiday companies are offering special deals for the week of the convention at around the £500 mark for flights and accommodation, or book one of the many self catering apartments or villas at low season prices. Either by taxi or pre-booked car rental Palma airport is only 30-45 minutes away.
